Some of the most important parts of your home’s exterior are also the smallest.

Without it, concentrated roof runoff can repeatedly flow against the siding or wall below.
Where Would You Find It?
Look where:
- A sloped roof terminates beside a vertical wall
- Siding continues beneath that intersection
- Gutter/drip-edge components meet the wall
This is often seen around:
- Garage roofs
- Porches
- Home additions
- Dormer-like transitions
The roof may be perfectly fine.
The siding may be perfectly fine.
The junction between them is where the problem can develop.
Why Is the Water Concentrated There?
Rain falling across the roof is directed downward.
At the bottom of a roof-to-wall transition, that water needs to be moved away from the wall.
Kickout flashing acts like a small diverter.
The VSI installation guide shows this component extending water beyond the fascia/sidewall area so it can drain away rather than being directed behind siding components.
What Happens if It Is Missing?
Possible warning signs can include:
- Repeated staining
- Deteriorated siding near the roof edge
- Moisture damage
- Soft wall areas
- Water staining inside
Those symptoms do not prove missing kickout flashing by themselves.
But the roof-to-wall transition should be inspected.
