What actually happens?

A professional replacement involves much more than:

take old window out → put new window in.

U.S. Department of Energy installation guidance includes measuring the rough opening, removing trim carefully, repairing the opening where necessary, checking flashing, dry-fitting the replacement and protecting the interior work area.

Here’s what homeowners should expect.

Before the Crew Arrives

Prepare the area around each window.

Move:

  • Furniture
  • Curtains
  • Blinds where requested
  • Fragile items
  • Electronics
  • Decorations

Give installers clear interior access.

Outside, remove obstacles near the window where practical.

 

Step 1: The Existing Window Is Removed

How much gets removed depends on the installation method.

The contractor may remove:

  • Sash
  • Existing unit
  • Trim
  • Other components

The goal is to expose the required opening without creating unnecessary damage.

 

Step 2: The Opening Is Inspected

This is an important stage.

Once the existing window comes out, the installer may find:

  • Old insulation gaps
  • Water staining
  • Deteriorated material
  • Previous poor installation
  • Flashing issues

DOE guidance specifically calls for inspecting and repairing the jamb/opening before installing the replacement unit.

A problem discovered here should not simply be hidden behind the new frame.

 

Step 3: Water Management Is Addressed

Windows interrupt the wall’s drainage system.

Building-science guidance recommends correctly integrated flashing so any water reaching the opening is directed outward rather than into the wall cavity.

This is one of the most important parts of installation—and one homeowners rarely see after the project is finished.

 

Step 4: The New Window Is Set and Secured

The unit needs to be installed:

  • Level
  • Plumb
  • Square
  • Properly fastened

If the frame is distorted during installation, sash operation and sealing can suffer.

 

Step 5: The Opening Is Insulated and Sealed

Gaps between the window and rough opening need appropriate treatment.

The goal is to limit:

  • Air leakage
  • Water intrusion
  • Unwanted heat transfer

Without compromising the window’s intended drainage.

 

Step 6: Trim and Finishing Are Completed

Depending on the project, this can include:

  • Interior trim
  • Exterior capping
  • Caulking
  • Cleanup
