Gutter Guards vs. Continuous Hangers: What’s the Difference?
A gutter guard sits over the gutter and helps keep debris out.
Simple.
But some systems do something else at the same time:
They support the gutter continuously.
Envirotech currently installs Alu-Rex eavestrough-protection products that include both traditional guard systems and continuous-hanger technologies such as T-Rex and DoublePro.
Those products should not all be thought of as identical “screens.”
What Does a Conventional Gutter Guard Do?
The basic goal is filtration.
A protective surface is installed above the open gutter to help reduce entry of:
- Leaves
- Twigs
- Larger debris
while allowing rainwater into the eavestrough.
Different products use:
- Perforated metal
- Mesh
- Other filtration designs
What Is a Continuous Hanger?
A traditional gutter may rely on individual hangers spaced along the run.
A continuous-hanger system extends support along much more of the eavestrough.
Envirotech’s current Alu-Rex lineup includes products designed to both strengthen the eavestrough and protect the opening from debris.
So the system performs two jobs:
support + filtration.
What Is T-Rex?
Envirotech currently describes T-Rex as its most popular continuous-protection system.
Perforated aluminum runs along the eavestrough and provides continuous support while shielding the gutter from debris.
This differs from simply clipping a small screen onto an existing open gutter.
What Is DoublePro?
DoublePro uses two perforated aluminum layers.
Envirotech positions the system as both filtration and structural gutter support.
The two-layer design is intended to control debris while allowing rainwater into the eavestrough system.
Can Protection Be Added to Existing Gutters?
Sometimes.
Envirotech’s current service offering includes products designed specifically for existing eavestrough systems as well as products incorporated into new installations.
But the existing gutters should be inspected first.
If they are already:
- Badly sagging
- Damaged
- Incorrectly pitched
- Undersized
adding protection on top does not correct those issues.
Does Gutter Protection Mean Zero Maintenance Forever?
Every exterior drainage system should still be observed.
Homeowners should periodically check:
- Downspout discharge
- Storm performance
- Exterior debris accumulation
- Physical damage
A protection system can reduce debris entering the gutter.
It does not remove the need to pay attention to the home’s drainage system.
Don’t Compare Gutter Protection Only by the Size of the Holes.
Ask whether the system provides:
- Filtration
- Structural support
- Compatibility with your existing eavestrough
- Appropriate performance for your roof and surrounding trees
Envirotech Exteriors installs several Alu-Rex eavestrough-protection systems and can recommend whether your home needs a guard for existing gutters or a continuous support-and-protection system as part of a new installation.
