Does Blown-In Attic Insulation Settle Over Time?
You open the attic hatch and think:
“Wasn’t the insulation higher before?”
Possibly.
Some loose-fill insulation can settle after installation.
But settlement by itself does not automatically mean the attic has a problem.
The important question is:
Does the attic still have the amount of insulation required for the intended thermal performance?
What Is Blown-In Insulation?
Blown-in—or loose-fill—insulation uses small pieces of material distributed throughout the attic.
Common examples include:
- Cellulose
- Fibreglass
- Mineral fibre
The material can fill irregular spaces that would be difficult to cover perfectly with rigid products.
Why Does It Settle?
Loose insulation contains air spaces between particles.
Over time, gravity can allow the material to compact.
How much depends on:
- Material type
- Installation method
- Density
- Manufacturer specifications
Professional installation should account for the behaviour of the selected product.
Does Settling Mean the R-Value Is Gone?
No.
Settlement does not mean the insulation suddenly stops working.
But if the final installed amount becomes lower than required for the target R-value, thermal performance may not be what was intended.
That is why proper installation is based on more than visual depth.
Installers also consider:
- Coverage
- Material quantity
- Density
- Target thermal value
Don’t Just Add More Immediately
If an attic appears low, first inspect for other problems.
Check for:
- Roof leakage
- Moisture
- Air leakage
- Blocked soffit vents
- Missing baffles
- Bathroom exhaust issues
Adding another layer over unresolved moisture can hide rather than solve the problem.
Uneven Insulation Matters Too
Sometimes the total amount is acceptable but distribution is poor.
Look for:
- Thin spots
- Bare areas
- Insulation pushed away from the hatch
- Blocked airflow near soffits
A good attic should be evaluated as a system.
The Goal Is Not to Have the Deepest-Looking Insulation. It Is to Have the Correct Thermal Coverage.
If your attic insulation looks lower or uneven, Envirotech Exteriors can assess existing depth, ventilation, moisture, and insulation before recommending a top-up.
