What Is a Knee Wall?
In some finished attics or upper floors, the sloped roof creates short vertical walls.
Behind those walls may be unconditioned attic space.
These are commonly called:
Knee walls.
Why Do They Matter?
One side faces conditioned living space.
The other may face an attic that becomes:
- Very cold in winter
- Very hot in summer
That makes the knee wall part of the building’s thermal boundary.
Insulation Alone Isn’t the Whole Story
Air can move through gaps around:
- Electrical boxes
- Framing
- Access doors
Air sealing and insulation need to work together.
What About the Knee-Wall Door?
If there is an access door, it should also be treated as part of the thermal boundary.
A poorly sealed door can become a major draft point.
Finished Attics Need Insulation on More Than the Flat Ceiling.
Envirotech Exteriors can assess attic insulation patterns and identify whether knee-wall areas are contributing to comfort problems.
