PLYWOOD VS. OSB ROOF DECKING

What’s Under Your Shingles?

Usually a structural panel deck.

Two common materials are:

  • Plywood
  • OSB

What Is Plywood?

Plywood uses thin wood veneers glued together in alternating directions.

What Is OSB?

Oriented strand board uses layers of engineered wood strands positioned in different directions and bonded together.

The American Wood Council notes that both are widely used structural panel products for roof sheathing.

APA also notes that properly rated plywood and OSB are manufactured to comparable performance standards for intended structural applications.

Does One Automatically Make a Better Roof?

Not simply because of the product name.

Performance also depends on:

  • Correct panel rating
  • Thickness
  • Support spacing
  • Fastening
  • Moisture exposure

Why Does Deck Condition Matter During Replacement?

Removing old shingles allows the contractor to inspect the deck for:

  • Rot
  • Swelling
  • Soft sections
  • Damage

NanoTech and Envirotech do not recommend hiding failed decking beneath new roofing.

The Shingles Protect the Deck. The Deck Supports the Shingles.

Envirotech Exteriors inspects exposed roof decking during replacement so damaged material can be addressed before the new roofing system is installed.
