CELLULOSE VS. FIBREGLASS BLOWN-IN ATTIC INSULATION

Both Can Be Blown Into an Attic

ENERGY STAR lists both:

  • Cellulose
  • Fibreglass

as common loose-fill materials for unfinished attic floors and difficult-to-reach areas.

But they are not the same material.

What Is Cellulose?

Cellulose insulation is primarily fibre-based material made largely from recycled paper products and treated for appropriate building use.

What Is Fibreglass Loose Fill?

Fibreglass uses very fine glass fibres distributed through the attic with blowing equipment.

Which Is Better?

The answer depends on:

  • Product
  • Target R-value
  • Attic configuration
  • Existing insulation
  • Installation method

Installation Quality Matters

Whichever material is selected, the contractor needs to achieve:

  • Correct depth
  • Correct density
  • Even coverage
  • Clear ventilation paths

Air Sealing Comes First

Blown insulation works best after major attic-floor leakage points are addressed.

The Material Matters. The Preparation and Installed Coverage Matter Just as Much.

Envirotech Exteriors can assess the existing attic and recommend an appropriate blown-in insulation strategy for the home.
