Want to Collect Roof Water Instead of Sending All of It Away?
A rain barrel can capture a portion of roof runoff for later outdoor use.
One way to connect it is with a:
Downspout diverter.
How Does It Work?
The diverter is installed in the downspout.
During rainfall, it redirects some water through a hose into the barrel.
Toronto’s current rain-barrel guidance explains that when compatible diverter systems fill the barrel, excess water can return to the downspout so it continues toward the normal drainage location.
Why Is Overflow Important?
A full barrel cannot keep accepting water.
Overflow should be directed:
- Away from the foundation
- Toward appropriate drainage
Canada’s flood-prevention guidance recommends directing downspout discharge toward well-drained areas and away from foundations where practical.
Does a Rain Barrel Replace the Downspout?
Usually no.
The property still needs a reliable water path when:
- Barrel is full
- Barrel is disconnected
- Winter conditions require another setup
What About Winter?
Rain-barrel equipment may need seasonal preparation depending on the product and climate.
Follow the barrel/diverter manufacturer’s instructions.
Collect the Water You Want—But Keep a Safe Route for the Water You Can’t Store.
Envirotech Exteriors can help homeowners think through eavestrough and downspout layout so rainwater collection does not compromise foundation drainage.
