WHY DOES OLD ALUMINUM SIDING TURN CHALKY?

What Is That Powder on the Siding?

Run your hand across older aluminum siding.

If a fine coloured or whitish powder comes away, you may be seeing:

Chalking.

The exterior finish has been weathering after years of:

  • Sun
  • Rain
  • Temperature change

Is the Aluminum Rotting?

Not necessarily.

The visible chalk can come from deterioration of the painted finish rather than structural failure of the panel.

Can Cleaning Fix It?

Cleaning may remove loose surface material.

But washing does not recreate a factory finish that has already weathered away.

Does Chalking Mean Replacement?

Not automatically.

Inspect the siding for:

  • Dents
  • Corrosion
  • Loose panels
  • Failed seams
  • Overall condition

If the panels remain sound, there may be options besides full replacement depending on the project goals.

Faded Finish and Failed Siding Are Not Automatically the Same Thing.

Envirotech Exteriors can assess whether aging aluminum siding needs maintenance, refinishing coordination, localized repair, or replacement.
